Rustic Manatee Riverhouse Wedding

Meghann and Tadd are one of the sweetest couples you can imagine. They came to us in January and really wanted an end of June wedding. Meghann is getting her master’s and just did not have time to deal with all that is involved in wedding planning, and we were happy to help!  They wanted a smaller, rustic wedding that reflected both their tastes and love for each other. It ended up being one of the most fun events ever!

Meghann’s grandparents got married on the same date, so Meghann and Tadd set up an honorary area for them, complete with their marriage certificate!

Meghann and Tadd met when she was out with some girlfriends, and fell down the stairs. Tadd happened to be standing at the bottom, and got her a napkin and sat down with her. They talked and became friends, and then realized they shared the same values, and Tadd asked her to be his girlfriend. The rest is history!!

We picked the Manatee Riverhouse for the venue, with all its exposed wood, river views and rustic charm. Jill & Joe from Jillian Joseph Photography were on hand to capture the day,  and KyleLynn did the hair and make up! Craig from Black Tie DJs had the best playlist going, and we all had a fantastic time!!  The bride’s stepmom made the centerpieces herself. and they fit perfectly with the space and the feel that Meghann and Tadd wanted to have!

Lauren from I Do Ceremonies performed a touching ceremony, perfectly customized to Tadd & Meghann. After Jill captured a few stunning sunset photos, the dancing began! Eat drink and be married is one of our favorite sayings, and it perfectly captures this wedding!!

After some minor issues with the dresses, which Southern Elegance Events was more than happy to help correct, the party got under way!

The pie bar with pies from Yoder’s in Sarasota was a HUGE hit, and there was enough for the vendors to enjoy as well, and believe me, enjoy we did!

As the night wound down, Meghann and Tadd made their grand exit down the dock of the Riverhouse, complete with sparkler send off!  Guests were raving about how much fun they had, and how they did not want the night to end!

Steam Punk Powel Crosley Wedding

Dustin & Becca are not your average couple. They like different. When we met to start planning their December wedding, they had the Powel Crosley and Coconut Coast Catering booked, but not much else. They knew they liked purple, grey and black, and they need they wanted steampunk influences. We got to work making that dream come true!

What resulted was a stunning combination of elegance and offbeat. Gorgeous candelabra centerpieces and purple linens gave a haunting gothic feel to the event, and the grounds of the Powel Crosley provided a breathtaking backdrop.

Becca is an artist, who makes pieces out of animal skeletons, so of course we had to incorporate some skulls. Small decorative skulls adored the sweetheart table, and Alla of Cake Zone even made sugar skulls for the cake!

All Event Rental provided gorgeous black chiavari chairs, and strung cafe lights above the ceremony space/dance floor, adding some goth couture vibe! Rev. Botschner had a  customized ceremony, and they even painted a heart as a joining ceremony to symbolize their love for the arts!

Once dinner was done, and Brian got the party started, Dustin’s sister had a big surprise! From the balcony came the first lines of Like a Virgin, and who do we see? Beneva Fruitville, Sarasota’s star drag queen making her way down the stairs!! Becca & Dustin LOVE Beneva Fruitville and Drag Queen Bingo, and Dustin’s sister had hired her as a surprise. She sang and danced with the couple, much to their delight and the amusement of their guests, then stayed to enjoy the party! Our team even got up and danced!

The Sandbar Anna Maria Island Wedding

Adam & Jenn were a super sweet, and super busy couple who came to us in need of help. We were more than happy to oblige the sweet couple and help plan their laid back beach wedding. They chose May 2nd as their date, and The Sandbar on Anna Maria Island as their venue for both ceremony and reception.

The Sandbar is a gorgeous venue that offers a sandy toes beach ceremony, with a covered (but still sandy toes) reception near by. The delicious seafood and delectable drink offerings were just what Adam and Jenn wanted, and Kristen from aka photographs was on hand to capture the entire day on film!

Jenn wore a gorgeous dress from Something Blue Bridal, and even though a May rain storm forced their ceremony off of the beach and under the pavilion, the bright colors and the steel drum still made the event sunny and bright.

Minimal flowers were needed because of the gorgeous scenery, and a beachy cake from Publix hit the spot for all of those with a sweet tooth. Black Tie DJs kept the party going, as they always do, and everyone on hand had a terrific time on the beach that night.

Ben and Jessica have been our clients for almost a year.  They booked their venue, the Powel Crosley Mansion and called us. It’s been a delightful year working with them to get this gorgeous wedding together!
Ben and Jess are adorable, and so happy and laid back it’s been a pleasure.  They assembled a great team of vendors, and March 22 went off without a hitch!

Introducing…

Whew has it been a long time since we’ve posted! The fall was packed busy with marketing and networking events, some big family news, the holidays and of course, weddings! While we wait for the photos to come back so we can share our fall weddings with you, we thought we’d take a minute to update you on some happenings with the company.

We decided back in October that business was expanding enough to justify bringing a third person in to join our husband and wife team.  After looking through quite a few resumes and conducting a few interviews, we decided to keep it close to home and hired Alicia.  Alicia and Nikki have been friends since high school, and Alicia has always had a passion for events.

She went to West Virginia University to study interior design, and while there also worked for the University’s catering company working large events.  After college, she moved back to Florida and took up ballroom dancing as a hobby, and even went to far as to become a ballroom dance instructor!

Great ballroom dance make up!

Great ballroom dance make up!

Alicia has a talent for design and a creative mind, not to mention some killer dance skills, and we thought those attributes combined with her catering background made her the perfect fit for the team!

She’s working as an assistant event coordinator with us currently, but will be taking on her own events starting in late Spring.  She’s also given us the ability to add ballroom dance lessons to the services we can offer our clients, which we are very excited about!

Alicia is smart, bubbly and fun, and can make any couple feel at ease while she gets the job done to make their day spectacular. We are thrilled to have her as part of the Southern Elegance Events family, and can’t wait for you all to meet her!

Beat the Heat Summer Wedding Ideas

Around the country, and around the world, people love to get married in the Summer.   Here in Florida, we have more weddings year-round, but summer is still a big hit for weddings.  Vacation time, sunshine..what’s not to love??  Well, for some, the heat can be a little much, especially coupled with the summer showers Florida is known for.

We’ve come up with a few tips to help you beat the heat (and the rain) for your summer wedding and enjoy every minute to the fullest!

1- If you’re having an outside wedding, be sure to have a back up plan! Whether it be an indoor room, a tent or another venue; if the rain starts pouring down, or the temperature is just too high, have somewhere you can use instead so you and your guests can still party the night away no matter what the weather does!

It can also offer a reprieve from the beating sun for your guests.  A shaded place to sit and a cool drink will do wonders for those who have flagging energy.

2- Try to schedule summer weddings towards the evening hours, closer to sunset.  While afternoon weddings are a must for some cultures, and that’s completely okay, if you have an option, choose later in the afternoon. You can get married a little before sunset, take some gorgeous sunset photos and enjoy the rest of the evening as darkness falls and the temperature drops (at least a little)!

3- Make sure to provide plenty of non- alcoholic beverages for guests, ideally before the ceremony even starts til the very end of the reception.  Alcohol is great, but with the heat in the summer, people also need to stay cool and hydrated. Providing them with waters, juices, teas and lemonades will help them keep their energy up and enjoy your party longer, as well as helping to ensure that no one ends up with dehydration or heat stroke! You can find cute ways to do this, whether you have a bartender or not.
summer parties, lemonade, wedding planning

4- You should also opt for lighter foods.  An outdoor or midday summer wedding is not necessarily conducive to foods like soups.  Stick to fun summer foods like grilled meats or vegetables, kababs and salads. Guests will  love a dessert table with sorbet, ice cream, popsicles etc, as long as you provide enough napkins to keep their clothes clean. Wonton tacos and ceviche make great passed appetizers too!

5- We always carry extra umbrellas in our cars for weddings we work.  If you think there’s a chance of rain during your event, look into getting some cheap umbrellas or ponchos from the dollar store, and providing them in cute baskets for your guests. You can offer these at the doors of the ceremony if the guests need to move from ceremony to reception, or just at the reception for guests who need to go to their cars or step outside for a moment.  You can also do the same with cheap sunglasses or handheld fans for the midday heat.

It’s also a great idea for couples to invest in a big, pretty golf umbrella. That way, if it rains, you can take couple’s portraits snuggled under your umbrella and stay dry. The pictures always look amazing!

6- Finally, consider the time of day and weather when you set the attire for your wedding.  Think in terms of what the bridal party wears, as well as what you ask guests to wear. Formal is fine if your wedding is indoors and air-conditioned, but asking for black tie or formal wear for a mid afternoon outdoor wedding will end up with unhappy guests and a sweaty wedding party. Some suggestions are light sheath dresses, linen suits and cotton to keep everyone cool and dry on the wedding day.

If you’re planning a summer wedding, we hope our above suggestions can be of help!  Any of them can help you, and your guests enjoy your event even more.Oh, and brides- airbrush make up is a good way to go if you’ll be outside in the heat! It tends to stay on better, even though sweat so you’ll be flawless all night!

We hope you’ve enjoyed our little glance into summer weddings, especially here in Florida!

Ca d’Zan Wedding

Last year, we were contacted by Curtis to ask for our help in proposing to his girlfriend, Lizzie.  We organized some surprise time off work for her, and a beachside proposal surrounded by friends.  After the engagement, Lizzie immediately asked for our help in planning their June 2013 wedding.  The date was set for June 1st, and they chose the gorgeous Ca D’Zan Mansion at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota as their ceremony and reception venue. Curtis eventually decided he’d like our help planning the rehearsal dinner at the Chart House Restaurant on Longboat Key as well.  After a year of planning, the weekend came around, rainy and humid but filled with joy and excitement.  Lizzie and Curtis were, and are, one of our favorite couples and we are thrilled to now call them friends as well.  The photos taken by the amazing Imely Photography are below, along with some of our own, and we’ll let them speak (mostly) for themselves.

The entire event was originally set up outdoors, but as the rains began to pour 20 minutes before the start of the ceremony, everything got moved under our tent.  Luckily, the clouds parted long enough for the guests to enjoy cocktail hour on the terrace with a tour of the mansion, and for Curtis and Lizzie to get some amazing shots around the grounds of the mansion.
